What are the components of viral transport media?

A viral transport system is dependent on more than just the viral transport media solution. Indeed, there is mounting evidence that dry transport tubes can be extremely effective at preserving viable samples during transport. As a result, the effectiveness of a number of key components is critical to the success of a viral transport system.
1. Viral transport tube
Viral transport media is typically housed in a sterile tube made of premium medical grade plastic. Some tubes may be designed with buffered proteins and antibiotics to inhibit the growth of potentially contaminating bacteria and fungi.

 

2. Viral transport cap

A securely closed transport tube is essential for preventing contamination of the sample specimen during transport. Many tubes have screw caps for a secure seal and ease of use, whereas other transport tubes may have a plug top for a secure seal.

 

3. Collection swab

Some viral transport media and systems are designed to work with a particular type of swab. Not every swab material is appropriate for viral testing. Cotton, for example, cannot be used to make nasopharyngeal swabs because organic materials interfere with the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing process. To avoid confusion about the right components, some manufacturers sell swab kits that include viral transport systems.
