What Is an Erlenmeyer Flask?

Feb 09, 2023

The Erlenmeyer flask is a well-known laboratory tool that consists of a flat circular base, an inverted cylindrical neck, and a conical body made of glass. It has a stopper that can be used to close the opening. Because it is a special type of beaker, the Erlenmeyer flask, also known as a conical flask or titration flask, is also one of the most commonly used pieces of equipment for mixing and heating. Its conical shape and narrow neck serve a specific function, which will be discussed further below.

The Erlenmeyer flask, like the beaker, has volume measurement markings on its side called graduations. These numbers represent the volume of the flask, which typically ranges from 50 ml to 1000 ml. Erlenmeyer flasks are used to estimate the volume of a solution. It is not a precise volume measuring device and is only accurate to about 10% above and below the actual measurement. Erlenmeyer flasks are made of glass or plastic resin and come in a variety of sizes and capacities. The inside mouth of the flask is sometimes frosted to aid in the retention of the stopper.
